The Activity report

Finding out who published, moved, trashed or took over something, and when.

Reports > Activity lists what people have done to pages, blocks and media, newest first. It answers questions that come up after the fact: who published this page, who moved it to the trash, who took it over while I was editing it.

Any signed-in user can open it. You see entries only for content you have access to; when some are left out, the report says how many.

What is listed

Group What happened
Editing Edit taken over
Publishing Published, Republished, Reverted to published, Scheduled to publish, Schedule removed, Marked ready, Withdrawn to edit, Release published, Release rolled back
Structure Moved to trash, Restored from trash, Deleted permanently, Moved, Language added, Language removed
Settings Access rights changed, URL name changed, Simple address changed, Redirect changed, Expiration changed

Each entry shows when it happened, who did it, the item, and a detail where there is one: who a page was taken from, which version went live, what an address was changed to.

Saving a draft is not listed. The versions of a page already show who saved what.

Finding an entry

  • Person narrows the list to one person.
  • What happened narrows it to one kind of entry.
  • From and To narrow it to a range of days. Today, 7 days and 30 days fill them in.
  • Select an item's name in the list to see only that item, from its first entry to its last. Select a person's name to see only that person.

The filters combine, and the address in your browser changes with them, so you can send somebody the list you are looking at.

Things to know

  • A page published by a release has two entries: one for the release, and one for the page that names the release.
  • A page published on a schedule is listed as published by Scheduled publish. The entry before it shows who set the schedule.
  • Taking your own edit back from another browser tab is not listed.
  • An item deleted permanently keeps its entries, under the name it had. Only administrators see them, because there is no longer an item to check your access against. The same goes for a change to the access rights of a block folder or a category.
  • Entries are kept for 90 days. An administrator can change that; see below.

The report is a record of activity for the people who work in the CMS. It is not a tamper-proof audit trail: somebody with access to the database can change it.

Changing how long entries are kept

In appsettings.json:

"Cendia": {
  "ActivityLog": { "RetentionDays": 90 }
}

RetentionDays is held between 7 and 730 whatever you set. The Activity Log Retention scheduled job deletes what is older, once a day.
